Back to winning ways

Swindon bounced back to winning ways with a strong home performance against Exeter Uni B, Swindon missing Mark Preston in defence saw the welcome return of Andrew McGregor to the forward line, Swindon started in their normal quick, flowing attacking style form the pushback and dominated the game, with Gillingham, Salmon and McGregor being creative and putting in the leg work to stretch and ask questions of the student defence and it was Matt Salmon that was first on the score sheet mid way through the 1st half his quick turn and shot got a deflection from the defender and put it into the goal passed the wrong footed keeper and Swindon extended their lead minutes later and a great break from Scrase down the right, linking with Gillingham found Luke Cejer who smashed it into the Exeter goal to the delights of the large crowd of Swindon supporters at Isambard school, Jack Biddle minutes later saw his powerful reverse stick shot go whizzing passed the far post with inches to spare. With the half coming to an end Exeter Uni had a brief spell of pressure, with a number of penalty corners which were easily cleared by the Swindon defence.

The second half started tough for Swindon as the home side managed to battle through a spirited start from the visitors, the Swindon defence under severe pressure managed to break away with John Scrase down the right who found Matt Salmon on the baseline, his well placed shot caught the keeper out of position and sneaked inside the near post to put the home side 3-0 with 25 minutes remaining. But nothing is ever easy with Swindon this season, as they made the win look like it wasn’t going to happen, the visitors made the most of some poor defending and goal keeping as they pulled 3 goals back, their final goal coming with just 4 minutes of the match remaining, but this game was Swindon’s and they were going to snatch a late, late goal to the delights of the shocked Swindon supporters who had been on a rollercoaster of a match, Scrase again breaking down the right, found McGregor on the baseline who beat 2 defenders, drew the GK to slip the ball to Luke Cejer who was unmarked into the centre of the area, and scored to the delights of the crowd and with only 45 seconds remaining on the clock.

Next week Swindon travel to league strugglers Taunton Vale, but who recorded their first win of the season with a 6-1 win over other league strugglers ECV Hornets.
