At 73, Andy Fraser embodies the spirit of Swindon Hockey Club - a living testament to the club's enduring legacy and commitment to nurturing young talent. With a remarkable journey spanning over five decades, Andy has witnessed and shaped the club's evolution from a local team to a breeding ground for promising hockey players.
"I've played with Swindon my entire life," Andy explains with a twinkle in his eye. "Now, I'm watching my 13-year-old grandson follow in my footsteps, which is something truly special." His connection to the club goes beyond personal achievement, focusing intensely on developing the next generation of players and pictured after playing a recent league match in the same team as Noah for the Men’s 4th team development side.
The club's junior section, led by Michéle and supported by 12 dedicated coaches, provides a comprehensive pathway for young athletes. Starting from age five, children can participate in regular tournaments across various age groups, including under-8s, under-10s, and under-12s. This structured approach has produced remarkable results, with five juniors currently on England pathway programs and several young players already making their mark in the first team.
Recent success stories include Reece and Arthur, who made their first team debut in a stunning 5-0 victory, and players like Elsie and Toby, who are expected to progress to higher levels of competitive hockey. While the club celebrates these achievements, Andy acknowledges the challenge of retaining top talent, with many promising players moving potentially to National League teams and bigger clubs in neighbouring counties. For any grassroots club however, this is actually a positive problem to have, meaning those players have been properly developed for greater achievements.
Swindon Hockey Club offers more than just a sporting experience. It provides a supportive community where players of all ages can develop skills, build friendships, and experience the joy of team sports. From veterans like Andy to young enthusiasts just starting their journey, the club creates an inclusive environment that celebrates passion, skill, and personal growth.
